Energy Conservation

Federal agencies must meet several energy, water, and environmental management goals including those set forth in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and those subsequently strengthened by Executive Order 13423, Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management. For federal facilities those requirements include:

  • Improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings 
  • Using sustainable design when constructing new buildings 
  • Reducing water consumption 
  • Increasing the use of renewable energy technologies 
  • Using sustainable environmental practices

The Office of Engineering and Construction Management offers resources to help the Department achieve its goals, including Green Lease Policies and Procedures for Lease Acquisition.  

Additionally, the Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) works to reduce the cost and environmental impact of the Federal government by advancing energy efficiency and water conservation, promoting the use of distributed and renewable energy, and improving utility management decisions at Federal sites. To help agencies achieve their goals, FEMP provides many resources, including:
