Emergency Training Classes

As part of the continuing effort to provide a safer workplace, the Headquarters Occupant Emergency Planning Team is pleased to announce that continuous training sessions will be held on various topics.

  1. Warden, Monitor, and Assistant Training
  2. First Aid, CPR, and AED Training
  3. Escape Mask Training

Occupant Emergency Plan Warden and Monitor Training

As part of the continuing effort to provide a safer workplace, the Office of Management is pleased to announce that additional training sessions will be held for Wardens, Monitors, and Assistants at Forrestal and Germantown. As a Warden, Monitor, or Assistant, you should, annually, attend one of the training sessions for your building to learn and/or to improve how to safely perform the duties of your position.

Training for new Wardens, Monitors, and Assistants will last about 90 minutes and will include dramatic video and real-life discussions to enable you to understand the importance of your duties; how to recognize emergency situations which are not always evident; and how to recognize conditions that would require you to abandon the performance of your duties and evacuate yourself immediately.

Refresher Training will last approximately 45 minutes and will include additional information on how to respond to various scenarios, how to use the evacuation chairs, and how to use fire extinguishers.

The system of Wardens and Monitors at New York’s World Trade Center, enhanced after the 1993 bombing there, has been credited with saving lives during the attack of September 11, 2001. This is important and valuable work that can save lives in an emergency. Your willingness to perform the vital services provided by Wardens, Monitors, and Assistants is greatly appreciated.

Registration: This training is primarily for new Wardens, Monitors and Assistants, although personnel needing a refresher may attend.  Employees may register for a class through the DOE CHRIS Workflow system, by calling the Headquarters Safety, Health and Security Office at (202) 586-1005, or e-mailing the HQ Safety and Health mailbox (hqsafetyandhealth@hq.doe.gov). The class will be listed on the employee's official training record only if registration is completed through the CHRIS Workflow system.  Class size is limited to 30 people.

Wardens, Monitors and Assistants are needed to help with safe, orderly evacuation of Headquarters buildings.  If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions about the course, please call (202) 586-1005.

While this training is primarily for new contractor and Federal personnel, individuals needing a refresher may attend.  Please remember that the training is a requirement under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for employees located at Forrestal, 950 and 955 L’Enfant Plaza.  Germantown employees are also welcome to attend.

Registration:  Employees may register for a class through the DOE CHRIS Workflow system, by calling the Headquarters Office of Safety and Health at (202) 586-1005, or e-mailing the HQ Safety and Health mailbox (hqsafetyandhealth@hq.doe.gov).  Please note that this course will only be listed on the employee's official training record if registration is completed through the DOE CHRIS Workflow system.  Class sizes are limited to 30 people. Due to the brief duration of this training, no admittance will be allowed once a session has begun.

The cabinets in the corridors of the Forrestal, 950 L’Enfant Plaza, and 955 L’Enfant Plaza buildings house the “Essex VRU+” escape masks.  This deployment enhances our emergency preparedness by providing protection to employees should they need to move through a hazardous environment.

Because the Essex VRU is a type of respirator, all employees, contractors and detailees at the Forrestal building, 950 L’Enfant Plaza and 955 L’Enfant Plaza are required to be trained in the use and limitations of the escape mask.  This is a requirement under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Individuals from Germantown who frequent the Forrestal building are also welcome to attend the training.

If you have any questions please call the Headquarters Office of Safety and Health on (202) 586-1005 or e-mail the Safety and Health mailbox (hqsafetyandhealth@hq.doe.gov).
