DOE Computers for Learning Program
Through Executive Order 12999, the Computers for Learning Program was established to provide Federal agencies a quick and easy system for donating excess and surplus computer equipment to schools and educational nonprofit organizations.
When Department of Energy equipment is no longer needed by a Headquarter's organization, it should be turned in to the property office for excess. The first thing property does, is check for reutilization within DOE HQ. If the equipment cannot be reutilize within HQ, we have authority to donate computer equipment to schools; however, in accordance with Executive Order (EO) 12999, Section 2(b), we must give particular preference to schools listed in Federal enterprise communities or empowerment zones.
In order to locate schools which meet that criteria, we search the Computers for Learning website (http://www.computers.fed.gov/). Employees who know of schools that need computer equipment are encouraged to have the schools register on the website.
Employees are welcome to alert the property office of schools that need equipment so that we can watch for them on the website. If they meet the EO's enterprise communities/empowerment zone criteria, we will certainly try to help them out, or if there are no schools in the enterprise communities or empowerment zones listed, we will contact the schools identified to us by DOE staff. We cannot guarantee, however, that schools identified by employees will receive DOE equipment.
